Next generation Volkswagen Camper likely to be all-electric

Volkswagen has shed some light about the next generation Camper which will likely be out before the end of the decade.
The classic Camper went out of production on December 31, 2013 but Volkswagen is now analyzing the prospects of bringing it back with a styling influenced by the original model from the 50s. However, the only way to keep the car's shape would be to mount an electric motor and install the batteries underneath the floor.
As seen in the Bulli electric concept, there's not much space from the A-pillar forwards which means there is not enough room for a combustion engine at the front while a rear-mounted engine like in the original model is not being considered as it would jack up the price and VW wants to keep it affordable.
The revived Camper will ride on the MQB platform and will keep the compact boxy shape as well as the unique D pillar. There's no word about a launch date, but chances are it will be out in the next five years and will be previewed by a show car, as stated by the company's chairman of the board Dr Heinz-Jakob Neusser in an interview with British magazine Auto Express at the New York Auto Show.
